Backup Exec 2012 Small Business Edition
Backup Exec 2012 Small Business Edition (BE 2012 SBE) offers an all-in-one package for small businesses. Microsoft has recently reviewed and changed its licensing for the Microsoft Small Business Server, operating system and application software, due to more customers wanting to take advantage of server virtualization technologies. In order to simplify the whole licensing process and come in line with the Microsoft licensing change, as well as allowing the product to support other O/S, Symantec has replaced all Backup Exec Small Business Server Editions with the new Backup Exec 2012 Small Business Edition (BE 2012 SBE) whcih offers even more versatility.
No matter what Microsoft operating system you are running, this new BE 2012 SBE edition supports up to three servers (whether physical or virtual). So, if you are running Microsoft on three separate physical you will need the core BE SBE product and two agents for the additional servers; if you are running one physical host and three virtual servers you need just one copy of BE 2012 SBE. You can also support both Linux and Mac operating systems with an additional agent, making the new BE 2012 SBE a true solution for all small businesses.
A single license of Backup Exec 2012 Small Business Edition provides total backup and recovery protection for one server including application protection for SQL, Exchange, Hyper-V, SharePoint and Active Directory. Each license can be easily expanded to support up to 3 servers (2 remote servers) by purchasing an additional Agent for Windows for Small Business Edition, Agent for Linux or Agent for Mac, depending on your Server O/S requirements.
Using the new Backup Exec interface, BE 2012 SBE comes with everything you could possibly need: included with the Backup Exec Media Server is Microsoft Application support, Bare Metal Recovery with Simplified Disaster Recovery technology, B2V, P2V support for Hyper-V, as well as being upgradeable to the full versions of Backup Exec 2012.
A large number of Backup Exec customers are protecting a single server. Backup Exec 2012 Small Business Edition is designed to accommodate those small business customers and includes the most commonly deployed Microsoft application agents (Exchange, SQL, SharePoint and Active Directory) making it the ideal solution for Backup Exec customers that are currently licensed for Backup Exec Small Business Server. BE 2012 SBE focuses on both the Microsoft Small Business Server (MS SBS) and small businesses running up to three servers on any O/S version of Microsoft (Msft O/S or SBS).
BE 2012 SBE is quick to setup and easy to use. It offers complete support for Microsoft applications, simplified data management and robust disaster recovery. The same new revolutionary user experience of the core version of BE 2012 is the basis for BE 2012 SBE and includes the new user interface together with enhancements to the backup data management lifecycle.
BE 2012 SBE also delivers the same Simplified Disaster Recovery as that of Backup Exec 2012 giving customers a robust dissimilar hardware disaster recovery solution that can be executed quickly and successfully to get their systems up and running.
New Backup Exec 2012 Small Business Edition User Interface
The new user interface has been designed with simplicity in mind. It conveys the information required more simply and concisely by providing users with just the things they need with reduced and consolidated options and choices. The aim was to create a user experience that is more intuitive so that anyone should be able to be productive within a short time.
The management of the data protection requirements has been changed to focus on the resources to be protected and the elimination of backup policies and complexity. Protecting systems by simply adding stages and showing relevant options will enable almost anyone to setup Backup Exec 2012 Small Business Edition.
Features:
Simplified Disaster Recovery
To help businesses prepare for and overcome the problem of server failure and downtime, Symantec has introduced Backup Exec 2012 with integrated bare metal recovery and dissimilar hardware recovery – also known as hardware discovery - capabilities. These new features make full server recovery easy, and offer it as a built-in element of Backup Exec 2012 data and application protection practices.
Now, using Backup Exec 2012, a single protection policy for servers can protect it against all types of disaster or failure, and enable all of the following types of recovery:
- Server Recovery
- Bare metal recovery
- Dissimilar hardware recovery
- Application Recovery (agent for Microsoft Applications and Databases included)
- Granular Application Recovery (agent for Microsoft Applications and Databases included)
- Granular File and Folder Recovery
- Granular object recovery
- Full Virtual Machine Recovery (Hyper-V only)
The core technology that enables the bare metal and dissimilar hardware restore capabilities within Backup Exec 2012 is called Simplified Disaster Recovery. This technology ensures that key system-level elements of a server are captured and stored as part of a backup operation. When a bare metal or dissimilar hardware restore operation is performed, this system-level information is used to rebuild the failed server and restore it to a functional state. Some of these critical system components include: System volume, Boot volume, Services volumes, and System state components.
In Backup Exec 2012, the Simplified Disaster Recovery feature is enabled by default for every new backup policy that is created. It is represented within the Backup Exec 2012 user interface as a part of the backup selections screen through a ribbon titled "Simplified Disaster Recovery"
Rapid Recovery for what you need when you need it:
- Makes applications, files, and server recovery easy
- Avoid costly downtime with fast, easy recovery
- Microsoft Applications and Hyper-V restore
Microsoft Application Support
Included in BE 2012 SBE is support for Microsoft Applications: Exchange Server, SQL Server, SharePoint and Active Directory. Powerful Granular Recovery Technology enables users to restore individual messages from Exchange, individual documents from SharePoint, quick restores of SQL. Server as well as individual Active Directory user accounts, organizational units, even individuals from a single pass backup. Fast and flexible technology reduces the backup and recovery time as well as storage needed on disk or tape media while protecting vital Microsoft Applications.
BE 2012 SBE dramatically reduces the time to recover from small disasters, helping to improve employee productivity, reduce the potential for greater issues, and alleviate the aggravation associated with traditional Active Directory protection and recovery. Only BE 2012 SBE can leverage the innovative Granular Recovery Technology (GRT) which helps IT Administrators save time and money by giving them the ability to restore critical data while applications remain online.
Backup to Virtual (B2V) and Convert to Virtual (P2V)
Modern businesses are based upon servers - powerful computing systems that host and manage business-critical applications and data. Servers are the lifeblood of business today, without which businesses could not function at a very basic level in our modern industry. Some critical applications and priceless customer and corporate data sheets, managing and protecting servers is the primary concern of IT professionals across the globe.
Backup Exec 2012 continues to invest in virtualization technology and to further enhance our virtualization offering two new key features are included in Backup Exec 2012 SBE product designed to help administrators solve the problem of moving physical servers to a virtual environment and also give administrators unique tools for leveraging virtualization technology for disaster recovery. These features have the ability to perform:
- Automated conversions of physical servers to a virtual machine replica (P2V)
- Automated conversions of physical servers – using existing backup sets – to a full functioning virtual machine replica (B2V)
- "Ad hoc" or on demand conversions of physical server backups to a full functioning virtual machine replica.
Convert from physical to Virtual (P2V) - The new Backup Exec 2012 P2V feature allows administrators to configure protection policies for physical servers that protect the server by:
- Storing backup data to the Backup Exec server
- Creating a virtual machine replica of the server on an available VMware or Hyper-V host
For protection policies configured with a P2V task, the backup operation and the virtual machine replica operation occur in parallel, or at the same time.
Backup to Virtual (B2V) - A Backup Exec 2012 protection policy configured with a B2V task is similar to a protection policy configured with a P2V task. However, B2V policies run the backup and virtual machine replica operations serially, meaning the backup operation runs first, and the virtual replica portion runs immediately afterwards or on a different schedule.
Both P2V and B2V functionality provide you with the flexibility to convert your physical machines to virtual machines quickly and easily anytime and from any location.
